Do You Qualify for an O-1A? A Self-Check Against All 8 Criteria

A practical self-assessment for the O-1A extraordinary ability visa. Walk through all 8 USCIS criteria with real examples, and find out whether you're closer to qualifying than you think.

Most people who would qualify for an O-1A never apply — because they assume "extraordinary ability" means a Nobel Prize or a Wikipedia page. It doesn't. USCIS doesn't ask you to be the best in the world. It asks you to meet at least 3 of 8 criteria with documented evidence.

This is a practical self-check. Go through each criterion and mark it as Strong, Maybe, or Not yet. If you land 3+ in Strong or Maybe, you're a real candidate.

The 8 Criteria, in Plain English

1. Awards

Nationally or internationally recognized prizes for excellence in your field. This includes industry awards, competition wins, and notable honors — not just the famous ones. You might have this if: you've won a hackathon at a major conference, placed in a recognized competition, or received a "top performer" award judged by your industry.

2. Membership

Membership in associations that require outstanding achievement, judged by experts. You might have this if: you're a senior/fellow member of a selective professional body, or were invited into an exclusive industry group.

3. Published Material About You

Press or trade coverage about you and your work — not written by you. You might have this if: you've been interviewed, profiled, quoted as an expert, or had your work covered by a publication or major blog.

4. Judging

You've evaluated the work of others in your field. You might have this if: you've reviewed papers, judged a hackathon or competition, served on a grant panel, or interviewed candidates as a recognized expert.

5. Original Contributions of Major Significance

Original work that has had real impact on your field. You might have this if: you built a widely adopted product or feature, hold a patent, or your research/methods are used by others.

6. Scholarly Articles

Authorship of articles in professional journals or major media. You might have this if: you've published papers, written for respected industry publications, or have well-regarded technical writing.

7. Critical Role

You've held an essential role at a distinguished organization. You might have this if: you were an early or senior contributor at a well-known company, or led a key team or project.

8. High Salary

Compensation high relative to others in your field. You might have this if: your total comp is above the field's typical range — equity counts.

Scoring Yourself

  • 3+ Strong: You're a strong candidate. The work now is documentation and a well-built petition.
  • 2 Strong + a few Maybes: You're close. The "Maybes" are usually a matter of gathering evidence you already have but haven't framed correctly.
  • Fewer than 3: There's a strategic path to build toward criteria over 6–18 months.

The most common mistake isn't lacking qualifications — it's under-documenting the ones you already have. A "Maybe" on Judging often becomes a "Strong" once you remember the three hackathons you judged.
